The
purpose of LAMP is to empower participants with leadership
skills and Spirit consciousness to live mission-focused lives in
God's kingdom. The leadership skills include goal setting and
achievement, responsibility, respect, communication, conflict
resolution, developing relationships, decision making, handling
failure, and creativity...while being mindful of Christ's
example, the Spirit's presence, and God's will.
Camp WaMaVa provides a safe,
supportive environment where participants can learn and practice
these skills through activities, discussion, and mentorship.
They will create, plan, and conduct real programs. Being a
summer camp setting, many opportunities will focus on leading
children, though considerable time will be spent
learning/leading with fellow LAMP participants, counselors,
volunteers, and camp administration. Examples of LAMP activities
include developing large group recreation games, leading
campfire skits/songs, presenting devotionals, administering arts
& crafts, assisting counselors, mentoring campers, and
determining camp program content.
Though the LAMP program is
conducted within a camp setting, it is designed to provide
lifelong leadership skills that serve all parts of life: at
home, as a coach, at church, with youth groups, in the
community, professionally, and even as future parents. This
program is not simply a fun way for long-time campers to
maximize their WaMaVa experience. It is for highly motivated,
hard-working individuals who can appreciate the challenges and
complexities of leadership. It is for those who feel called to
exemplify Christ not just as a person, but as a leader.
LAMP is a unique opportunity for
some serious fun. Serious in that there is real work and
responsibility to ultimately be Christ to our campers. Fun in
that the work focuses on the joy of children, valuing those
around you, working with incredible friends, being a light (er,
LAMP?), and enjoying the blessing of WaMaVa life in the beauty
of God's creation. You learn some serious life skills with
constant, encouraging feedback along with significant time of
personal reflection. It's a way to further discover who you are,
who you are becoming, in supportive place where people care
about you.

Note that the LAMP program is not
a Counselor-in-Training program. Leadership and mission focus
are its primary objectives. Camp counseling is one of many goals
that a LAMP participant may choose to pursue. The program's
skills are meant to be applied toward the spiritual calling of
each participant...whatever that calling may be. LAMP is a
significant commitment of time and work, so please carefully
consider your desire before applying. It may be a mature
decision to choose to junior staff* and/or camp another year.
The extra time and experience may make the program more
meaningful should you apply next year.
*LAMP participants are not
permitted to be junior staff members at any point during the
summer. However, if applying for LAMP and not selected, you are
eligible to apply for junior staff.
*The LAMP program is not designed
for multi-year admittance. Former LAMPs are eligible to apply as
junior staff or senior staff (if age/grade permits)
